关于追求

阿赫说,人就像一只小驴子,一直被胡萝卜勾着走:63的时候想再努力做做,尽早升64;等64了又开始想65了;等哪天升到67了,估计又开始想Partner了。

我说这叫追求,只不过每个人追求的东西不一样,不同的时候追求的东西也不一样。比如我,去过Phuket了,还想再去。再去,就不想单单晒太阳了,想去学潜水,拿潜水证书。爬山的人,爬了7000米,就要爬8000米;跑步的人,跑出9秒69了,就要往9秒58努力;凤凰男在大城市站住脚了,就开始想要去美国;生了一个孩子的,就开始琢磨着要生第二个、第三个;买了两套房子了,还想买第三套、第四套…

关于档次

看二手房看多了,摸到一个规律:市区里的高层公寓楼,物业档次如何,基本可以从电梯里的广告看出来。好的楼盘,比如地段巨好的,房龄巨新的,物业费巨贵的那种,电梯里都是光的;稍微次一点的楼,电梯里通常两侧都挂着广告,有些是分众的那种带视频,有些是普通的海报样的加个框;再次一点的楼,电梯里也有广告,但广告已经过时了,有些讲的都是一年前的促销活动,框框也裂了,玻璃也碎了;最次的楼和最好的楼一样,电梯里也是没有广告的,不过那估计是因为不屑一放。

大老板

大多数大老板都有这么一些共同点:

  • MSN的名字从来都不换,从来不加任何心情感悟或格言警句
  • 手机很少换,一个很普通的手机用很多年
  • 邮件都很短,很少长篇大论,夹叙夹议,图文并茂
  • 邮件规模很小,很少Reply With All,通常只给两三个人发信回信

要做大老板,先从做到形似开始。

如何买奶茶

我家马路对过有个可颂坊,最近开始兼卖奶茶咖啡,甚合我意。六块钱一杯,还可以用索迪斯卡。但是那里的工作人员总是搞不清楚我的需求。

有一次我要两杯奶茶,一杯要珍珠,一杯不要珍珠,有珍珠的那杯不要放糖,没有珍珠的要放糖,结果他们给的一杯有珍珠的是有糖的,没珍珠的是没糖的;有一次我又去买两杯奶茶,还是一杯要珍珠,一杯不要珍珠,有珍珠的那杯不要放糖,没有珍珠的要放糖,结果他们给的两杯都是没糖的;还有一次我要两杯奶茶,两杯都要珍珠,两杯都要放糖,结果他们给的两杯都没有珍珠,虽然糖都放了。

所以后来总结经验教训,改成一杯一杯买,先买一杯要珍珠不要糖的,钱付掉,奶茶拿到,转个身,再买一杯不要珍珠要糖的,再付钱。酱紫基本就不会错了。

重庆火锅

到重庆的第一天晚上,就听同车的一个成都小姑娘念叨着重庆火锅,说她有一年没吃火锅了,就指着这次来重庆好好吃一吃了。一下就把我胃口吊起来了。第二天的晚上,揣着忐忑不安的心情,我和苹果走进了体育路的这家串串香。看上去生意爆好。这也是我每次出门旅游在当地找吃的东西的原则:只要本地人多的地方,味道一定错不了,就算可能味道太当地而吃不惯,也好歹是正宗的本地草根味道。

吃起来倒也简单,每桌一口锅,锅里一律全红,完全没有什么鸳鸯锅的选项。涮的菜自己取,无论荤素都是3角一串(不过一串很小,就一棵菜,或一端鳝鱼,或一个鹌鹑蛋)。上手第一口觉得非常好吃,辣辣麻麻的。但没吃几筷就不行了,感觉变成香肠嘴了,舌头也尝不出味道了。就看着边上的本地人一大把一大把的取回来各种菜往锅里塞下去,吃完一大把又塞一大把,而看着自己锅里的串串,就是下不去筷子了。

最后结账,我们只吃了32串,加上雪碧和调料,总共就二十几块钱。起身离座的时候,边上那位回头问了句“还吃得惯么”,我们一边支支吾吾一边落荒而逃。初次挑战重庆火锅算是失败了。

可今天早上起来,在大礼堂边上吃了块带花椒味的糍饭糕以后,心思又活分起来了。将近中午来到解放碑这里,一抬头就看到一家“牛山老火锅”,正好是网上有人推荐过的,当时就决定再次挑战重庆火锅。

这次没敢点那些高难度的菜,例如丝瓜、冬瓜、香菇等暴吸辣的菜。吃一堑长一智,这次点了一盘黄鳝,一盘泥鳅,一盘毛肚,一盘磨菇,一盘金针菇。每一条黄鳝捞上来以后,先在碗里仔仔细细的把里面裹着的辣椒子和花椒全都剔干净了,然后再吃,而且每吃一口都歇一会儿,让麻劲过去一点,再吃下一口。就这样,终于把点的菜基本吃完,再次挑战重庆火锅终于勉强过关!

Dodge Caliber

上个月在西雅图出差,租的是一辆Dodge Caliber:

自从在今年车展上亲眼看到Caliber以后,就有买一辆的打算。所以,既然可以有得租,自然是再好不过的了。车的好坏,非要开上一段时间,天天开,开一些长途,又开一些local又开一些高速,才能充分体会出优点和缺点来。借着租车来试车,一举两得。开下来的结论是:可买。如果一定要说缺点,大概可以说两个:倒车的时候有一点点视野遮挡,主要原因是我倒车的时候习惯回头看而不是看后视镜;低速上坡转弯的时候经常有点轮胎打滑的声音,据说不要用原厂轮胎就好了。

在国内买车很苦恼。广大群众有着一致且独特的的审美情趣和价值标准:喜欢三厢车,喜欢厚钢板,喜欢桃木内饰和真皮座椅,喜欢研究扭矩,喜欢五档自动变速箱,鄙视四档自动变速箱。C4原本的亮点就是那浑圆的线条,可到了中国又搞出个带尾巴的版本,叫什么三厢世嘉;307,也是先加个尾巴卖,还卖得特别好,直到卖着卖着没新意了再出个不加尾巴的版本继续卖,其实没尾巴的才是原版。搞来搞去,外形有点味道能体现差异的车子都活不下去了,Chrysler的300C,多么漂亮的车子,堂堂正正的,可没人捧场。搞到最后,大厂的主打车型都长差不多。

开弓没有回头箭

今天的The Seattle Times上有这么个调查,调查的问题是:The offer you’ve been waiting for came through. The money is good, the job is great and the company is a winner. But when you tried to resign from your old job, your employer surprised you with a counteroffer that’s a bit higher than the other offer. What should you do?

结果是这样的:

  • 77%的人选择了:Reject the counteroffer and take the new job
  • 13%的人选择了:Tell both companies you need a week to think things over
  • 8%的人选择了:Use the new offer to negotiate a better deal from the new company
  • 2%的人选择了:Take the counteroffer

或许那8%的人的选择是个好的选择。我一直对很多经过我tech screen的人说,要好好准备面试,面试的前一天晚上休息好,因为工作的各个环节里,准备面试以及面试本身几乎是投资回报率最高的一件事情。一旦进了公司,就算苦干一年,也未必能把年薪从24万升成27万。但如果面试中留给雇主的印象稍微再好一点点,在谈offer的时候再多一点点本钱加上多一点点耐心,或许从进公司第一天开始就是27万了。或许此类用两家公司的offer相互抬价的行为看上去不怎么上台面,有点太赤裸裸的铜臭味。跟公司没什么好客气的,谈offer的时候是要钱的最好的机会,不能亏待了自己。众所周知的事实是:要想工资加得多加得快,多跳跳槽。

只有2%的人选择了留在原来的公司。换了是我,连counteroffer都不会开,凡是想好了要走的,只要开口,一律放行,绝对不搞萧何月下追韩信,也绝对不发动三姑六婆来游说。一方面,在我见过的人里面,被劝到最后留下来了的,很多到头来还是做得不开心,还是走掉了;另一方面,等到人家要走了才跟人说“你对我们很重要”、“你在我们这里有很大的机会”之类的话,未免太假惺惺,做姿态成分居多——既然我在这里有很大的机会,为什么早点不搞一点给我看看?我认识一个SDET,曾经共事过,一个东欧那里的人。前年秋天他做的不开心,想走,那个test manager挺赏识他的,想挽留他,就升他做了test lead,但不出半年,这人还是走了。如果我是这个test manager,我是不会这么干。老板如果想确保手下跟着自己多干几年,只能平时就多留一些心眼,防微杜渐,不让小问题日积月累。不要等到手下递辞职信的时候再千方百计地挽留,那时候就晚了,也没意思了。

如果把这个调查拿到上海做一做,恐怕选择”Reject the counteroffer and take the new job”的人会更多。中国人讲究开弓没有回头的箭。中国人对忠诚的理解和实践与美国人很不一样,中国人担心如果留下来了,老板会不会给自己穿小鞋,会不会很多机会就给别人了。所以中国人在提出要走的想法的时候也更谨慎,很多人是把下家都落实得差不多了才跟现在的老板说,说的那一刻,虽然人还没有check out,但心已经完全check out了,taking the counteroffer is no longer an option。

I Love Safeway

But I hate Washington state law. It says no selling beer after 2:00am. I was in Safeway this morning (or last night, hard to define), buying some chips and beers before joining the deployment in office. When I checked out, the cashier told me "sorry, no beer after two, it’s the Washington state law". It’s too bad. It was just 2:03 at that moment. Just three mintes too late. I ended up walking out of Safeway with chips only. I don’t like that law. American always have some weird laws.

Safeway is indeed good. It’s 24 hours like the tiny convenience stores in Shanghai, but it’s much much much larger. Some of the Safeway stores are even larger than some Carrefour stores in Shanghai. I always cannot understand how Safeway afford so many 24 hours big supermarkets (there are 22 Safeway stores around Lake Washington: Seattle, Bellevue, Kirkland, Redmond, Renton, etc.). Shanghai has much more population and higher density. But no supermarket in Shanghai can afford 24 hours.

I was chatting this with friends. They had some theories. Some believe Safeway can run 24 hours because there is no 24 hours convenience stores in the states, therefore, when night owls want to buy something, Safeway probably their only choice. It’s not really true. First, those 7-11s are still available at every gas station. Safeway is not really the only choice. Second, there aren’t many buyers at Safeway in mid night. This morning, 2:00am, there were probably 2-3 buyers in that store, including me. That Safeway probably won’t sell as much as a convenience store in Shanghai from mid night to dawn.

Some other’s theory is: Safeway actually lose money by keeping stores open in mid night, but this helps Safeway to build brand image and customer loyalty. It’s a valid point. But why there is no supermarket in Shanghai doing this? Don’t Carrefour want to build better brand image? The Carrefour in Gu Bei runs until 12:00am. Why can it further extend? Cannot, or don’t want to? Why? Don’t forget that the labor cost in Shanghai is much lower than in the states.

Anyway, I like Safeway. It’s a place that makes me feel safer when I am travelling in here alone. In late night, walking through the stack, smelling, looking at the fruits, meat and all types of food around me, it makes me feel pretty happy.
